Entering the Labyrinth
The "Galis" of Varanasi are a world unto themselves. Some are so narrow that two people can barely pass each other, yet they house ancient temples, centuries-old homes, and the city's best-kept secrets.
The Flower Market
Early morning in the alleys near the main temple, you'll find the flower market. The scent of marigolds and incense is the true perfume of Kashi.
Hidden Temples
Keep an eye out for small, vermillion-covered shrines built into the walls of houses. Many of these are older than the famous temples and have their own unique legends.
Navigating the Galis
Don't be afraid to get lost. Every turn reveals something new—a wall mural, a hidden cafe, or an ancient door. If you get truly turned around, just ask a local for the way to the nearest "Ghat," and you'll find your bearings.
